On Wednesday, March 10th, the Criminal Justice subcommittee met to discuss how the West Palm Beach Police Department compares with other Palm Beach police departments in terms of hiring considerations, hiring efforts, officer demographics, and officer compensation (salary/benefits). Barbra Chieves, a police officer trainer who travels country-wide to carry out police officer training might have more insight on this topic.
Members also discussed more in-depth the training processes, procedures, and orientations all officers are required to go through. Details were provided by Tameca West, who is the Assistant Chief in the West Palm Beach Police Department and a member of the Task Force’s Criminal Justice subcommittee. The subcommittee is considering whether to make the suggestion of mandating annual racial/social bias training. The subcommittee is still reviewing the logistics of having a citizens review board.
One of the subcommittee’s next steps is to review the information Tameca West will gather about Department officer training. In addition, Tameca West will check if Barbra Chieves, the police officer trainer, can be a guest speaker at one of the subcommittee meetings. Finally, Tameca West will find out if one of the police officer trainings can be recorded on video for the subcommittee to view.
