Notes from the Last Subcommittee Meeting…

On Thursday, May 20th, the Education & Workforce Development subcommittee welcomed guest speaker Rebecca Currie, Teacher on Special Assignment (TOSA) at North Grade Elementary School.

Currie has been providing food support for food-insecure students at her school. She also performs wellness checks. Currie described parent and teacher concern over the mental health impacts that COVID-19 and isolation have had on students.

She recommended investing in more mental health services as well as creating a task force or committee of counselors to address mental health issues in the community. She also recommended creating a needs assessment to understand what schools need and how to better engage students.

The subcommittee planned to schedule a 1-hour meeting before the June Action Summit to make sure all members were aligned on the subcommittee priorities. They also are helping with Action Summit outreach.
