On Wednesday, March 17th, the Real Estate & Housing subcommittee welcomed guest speakers Dr. Alisha R. Winn, who is a member of the Task Force, and Mr. Craig Glover.
Dr. Winn is the owner and founder of Consider the Culture, and is an applied cultural anthropologist and adjunct professor at Palm Beach Atlantic College. She has also conducted extensive research on West Palm Beach.
Glover is Executive Director of North End Rise, an organization that asks for community input and ideas to improve housing, education, employment, and community wellness in the area.
Both guest speakers discussed their experiences and findings related to real estate and housing in West Palm Beach and agreed that it is important to thoroughly get to know the community they are serving.
Subcommittee members then discussed if the city was doing enough on its end to provide clear avenues for renters to become homeowners. Members also discussed potential barriers to becoming a homeowner. They then discussed affordable housing availability and the ownership of vacant lots (rules to ownership, government vs. privately owned lots, etc.)
The subcommittee has planned an additional meeting scheduled for next Wednesday, April 14th, from 3 – 4:30 p.m. to allow more time for panelist speakers to present. The meeting details are below. The subcommittee will continue to support necessary Action Summit work and advertise the upcoming Action Summit.
